SkyWater Establishes Cryogenic Lab, Utilizes FormFactor’s Leading Tool for RTS Noise Detection in Read-Out Integrated Circuit Applications

Public-private partnerships support SkyWater’s leading-edge domestic capabilities and advancement of ROIC technology

BLOOMINGTON, Minn. – March 21, 2023 – SkyWater Technology (NASDAQ: SKYT), the trusted technology realization partner, today announced it has established a new cryogenic lab to characterize random telegraph signal (RTS) noise for read-out integrated circuits (ROICs). Mitigating RTS noise is crucial to improving the image quality and performance for ROIC customers in various applications such as night vision, military surveillance, and industrial and automotive thermal imaging.

SkyWater establishes cryogenic lab to characterize RTS noise for ROICs.

SkyWater’s cryo lab utilizes FormFactor’s leading cryogenic probe system that enables precise on-wafer measurements in extreme environments. SkyWater partnered with the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga and Arizona State University’s electrical engineering teams to develop test chips which are used to determine how much RTS noise exists for various transistor types and temperatures. From these measurements, enhancements are made for improved imaging.

For ROIC customers, it is crucial to minimize RTS noise as it becomes a limiting factor to image sensor performance.  SkyWater’s cryo lab detects and measures noise which enables mitigation efforts for RTS effects. The new cryogenic noise characterization capabilities at SkyWater further enhance the company’s ability to streamline process and product development for advanced imaging systems in both defense and specialty industrial applications.

FormFactor’s high-performance probes are optimized for testing of cooled infrared sensors and cutting-edge technologies that operate at cryogenic temperatures, making it possible to collect accurate data across a comprehensive range of application environments. FormFactor’s cryogenic probe system acts as a freezer, bringing down the sample environment to extremely cold temperatures and utilizes a state of the art E4727B Advanced Low-Frequency Noise Analyzer (A-LFNA) system from Keysight Technologies to measure the noise. Furthermore, FormFactor’s Advanced Cryogenic Lab, which launched in 2022, played a crucial role in test development by providing early access to a cryogenic wafer prober while SkyWater’s cryo lab was being prepared.

“The FormFactor cryogenic probe system, with the ability to measure at the wafer level down to seven Kelvin, positions SkyWater to advance ROIC technology to its customers,” said Dr. Mike Slessor, CEO of FormFactor.  “Our cryogenic test and measurement product portfolio, expanding from 10 millikelvin to 77 Kelvin, enables demanding applications such as ROICs and quantum computing to customers worldwide.  We are thrilled with this SkyWater and Keysight collaboration.”

“Facilitating our cryo lab was a successful collaboration among many partners, both public and private,” said SkyWater Chief Technology Officer Dr. Steven Kosier. “With an aim to advance ROIC technology and enhance domestic capabilities for our customers, we invested in FormFactor’s state of the art cryogenic probe system. By partnering with ASU and UTC, we were able to quickly develop the test chips to measure and characterize RTS noise which speeds up the development process.”

According to a 2022 Transparency Market Research report, the ROIC market is expected to witness sustainable growth with North America projected to dominate the global market. The projected growth is due to an increase in usage of infrared (IR) imaging systems as they become important in healthcare, aerospace and defense, industrial, and automotive applications. Advancement in IR imaging systems can help in several applications such as night vision, disaster rescue, homing and tracking, ecology and weather forecasting, surveillance, predictive inspection and maintenance, remote temperature sensing, short range communication, spectroscopy, and medical diagnostic and treatment.

SkyWater President and CEO Thomas Sonderman to Deliver Keynote Speech at U.S. International Semiconductor Executive Summit (ISES)

BLOOMINGTON, Minn. – February 28, 2023 – SkyWater Technology (NASDAQ: SKYT), the trusted technology realization partner, today announced that Thomas Sonderman, the company’s president and CEO, will present a keynote speech at the upcoming U.S. International Semiconductor Executive Summit (ISES) which will take place on March 7-8, 2023. The conference provides a platform to strengthen the U.S. supply chain and promote progress and collaboration among executives in semiconductor manufacturing, design and research. The theme of Sonderman’s keynote is “Revitalizing Domestic Semiconductor Manufacturing: Challenges, Opportunities and Emerging Applications.”

With the passage and signing of the CHIPS and Science Act of 2022, companies in and adjacent to the semiconductor industry are working on plans to help revitalize domestic manufacturing, develop the workforce, strengthen American supply chains and accelerate the technologies of the future. U.S. Commerce Secretary Gina Raimondo, in her recent speech on the CHIPS Act at Georgetown University, noted: “As with our leadership in nuclear energy and the space race, America’s ability to maintain our competitive edge in advanced technologies is essential to our ability to ensure the responsible deployment of that technology.”

During his keynote speech, Sonderman will discuss how SkyWater is uniquely positioned as a critical industry partner to bolster the vision of our country’s leaders and ignite a domestic semiconductor renaissance that includes onshoring the advanced packaging solutions of the future, once again leveraging America’s record of unprecedented ingenuity in the technologies that are essential to our nation’s future. He will also talk about how we can address the challenges of bringing chip manufacturing back to the U.S., invest in opportunities for supply chain certainty and security, and enable nimble new innovations that can be accelerated with CHIPS funding to lead the next wave of computing.

According to Sonderman, “We can reclaim manufacturing leadership by having a national strategy derived from the CHIPS and Science Act. CHIPS funding will enable us to accelerate synergistic innovation while addressing the main challenges of reshoring, specifically near term talent shortages and higher costs. A key component of the CHIPS Act supports semiconductor manufacturing workforce development initiatives, partnerships and programs. Moreover, what we discovered during the pandemic is that supply chain certainty, along with IP protection, is even more critical than low cost for many applications.”

Sonderman added, “Although advanced nodes get most of the attention, CHIPS funding will specifically allow for investments in important new innovations being driven at the ‘long tail’ of semiconductor device demand, which best represents the highly specialized needs of 65nm and above device technologies. This creates exciting opportunities for SkyWater to accelerate the adaptation of novel applications in critical markets such as aerospace, defense, bio-medical and advanced computing.”

Taking place in Phoenix, Arizona from March 7–8, 2023, U.S. ISES brings together participants from different sectors of the semiconductor supply chain, including political, business, financial, and research, and industry leaders. For more information on the event, please visit www.ises-usa.com.

VORAGO Technologies to Move All its Manufacturing Stateside in Strategic Partnership with SkyWater’s Trusted Foundry

SkyWater to implement VORAGO’s patented HARDSIL® technology that enhances performance of radiation-hardened and radiation-tolerant devices used in commercial, aerospace and defense applications

BLOOMINGTON, Minn. and AUSTIN, Texas – January 24, 2023 – SkyWater Technology (NASDAQ: SKYT), the trusted technology realization partner, today announced a strategic partnership with VORAGO Technologies, effectively moving VORAGO’s fabrication efforts stateside to SkyWater’s DMEA-accredited Category 1A Trusted Foundry. The partnership is based on SkyWater implementing VORAGO’s patented HARDSIL® technology, which is a cost-effective semiconductor processing method that enables devices to operate at higher temperature and radiation levels.

With this implementation, HARDSIL will be available to SkyWater customers as a design-enabled processing method for new or existing designs without any impact on die size, specification, and without redesign. HARDSIL will enhance SkyWater’s bulk 90 nm CMOS process for commercial use in space, aviation, industrial, and medical applications that require higher levels of radiation tolerance.

In contrast to standard commercial design and manufacturing processes, high-reliability radiation-hardened (rad-hard) electronic components must be designed and manufactured so that exposure to ionizing radiation and/or extreme temperatures does not result in malfunctions or catastrophic failure. VORAGO offers innovative technology which enables meeting rad-hard performance without requiring design changes – eliminating or reducing the need for costly and time-consuming adjustments or modifications.

Recently, the U.S. has made the strengthening of domestic semiconductor manufacturing capabilities a major priority. As the semiconductor industry experiences silicon shortages, SkyWater’s fab and VORAGO’s technology are positioned to domestically source these important components for use in commercial as well as aerospace and defense applications.

“Partnering with a U.S.-based pure-play foundry is an incredible milestone for us,” says Bernd Lienhard, CEO of VORAGO Technologies. “We’re excited to move all of our manufacturing to SkyWater, the foundry of choice for our next-generation of rad-hard processors. We’re proud to work with SkyWater to bring our patented HARDSIL technology to the aerospace and defense industry at large.”

“We are pleased VORAGO has chosen SkyWater as its preferred foundry,” said Thomas Sonderman, president and CEO of SkyWater. “Implementing their HARDSIL technology enhances our bulk 90 nm CMOS process by enabling applications in commercial and other markets that require high levels of radiation tolerance. VORAGO’s choice to move all their manufacturing to the U.S. is commendable as the nation continues its reshoring efforts for national and economic security.”

About HARDSIL® Technology
HARDSIL is a patented, node-, foundry- and product-agnostic solution utilizing a few additional implant modules based on standard fab equipment, allowing for the fabrication of rad-hard electronic components. Specialized design libraries or major process modifications are not necessary, allowing foundries to transparently re-use existing IP, design libraries and flows. HARDSIL easily incorporates exceptional rad-hard capability into standard semiconductor IC creation. HARDSIL is a cost-effective modification to commercial process flows that can be implemented quickly with minimal incremental mask and implant steps. VORAGO has developed multiple products using HARDSIL and it has been used under license by other leading semiconductor suppliers.
